G2 Speech Contest Poem

The class will use Rafaela's adaptation of Christina Rosetti's poem, "What is Pink." She simply calls her poem, PINK!

The speech contest is June 15th. Not only will students need to be familiar with the poem, they will also learn some dramatic gestures.

Book Cafe was a success

Our visit to the Book Cafe at the JCC was a big hit! The students were very excited about purchasing books of interest.

Congratulations to Rafaela. She is the winner of the Read-a-thon, having read 3,071 pages during the days of the Read-a-thon.

Dear parents,
It was a pleasure to see you this morning at the CHUMASH party. Thank you for joining us.

Tomorrow Grade Two will go to the book Cafe in the JCC from 10:05 to 10:50am. Feel free to join us there at that time. If you would like for your child to buy books and you will not be there, please put money in an envelope with his or her name clearly written on it.

Afterward, they are scheduled to go for swimming in the pool area. Before leaving the Book Cafe is a good time to say goodbye to your child, as parents do not join us for swimming class. Students should come to school with their swimsuits on in the morning. Each child should be wearing the swimsuit under the school uniform. Also, please remind your child of proper etiquette in the restrooms at the JCC.

Eager and attentive G2 students

Dear parents,

Your child will be in Grade 3 very soon. We have been preparing all year for the next grade, and there are still many skills and practices to master, including home activities. Homework needs to be completed and returned to the Finished Work basket on time. If the student does not finish the homework, please bring it to school anyway. I can check the progress and give the book or assignment back to the student to finish.

Students need to study the spelling words at home in order to be more confident and learn the spelling of common English words. We will need your help in regulating homework times and environments that give your child a chance to his or her very best with no frustration or stress.

Take time each day to read the blog with your child.

Remember, homework should take 20 minutes each day. Some students, especially a lot of eager learners from this class, will do more. However, please regard and observe the homework time. It will help create a peaceful environment where homework is not a stressful activity and also where the students feels accomplishment for having worked throughout the entire homework time, whether the work has been completed or not.

You may write notes in the Communication Book when you wish to correspond with the school's staff.

Today, Grade 2 had a spelling pre-test. We will begin having the spelling pre-tests again. Students must copy the misspelled words 3x each after the pre-test is taken. The spelling post-tests will be graded differently in order to prepare for Grade 3. Instead of just the words being checked, proper sentence structure will also be part of the mark each student receives. Therefore, the practice the students get when they write in the journal each day will help them to remember how to write properly-formed sentences on spelling tests and other assignments.

Although sentences are just now being checked in the spelling tests, checking proper sentence structure has been a practice throughout this school year for the class.

Dear Parents,
Grade Two is easing in to the last theme of the year, How Does the World Work. Topics which include time zones, geographic boundaries, forms of communication, and shelters will be integrated into the curriculum. Math is more fun as it is being wrapped up in multi-digit addition and subtraction, fractions, and some division. Students are becoming more and more fascinated by solids, liquids, and gases while becoming more sophisticated scientists. Today they were serious scientists discovering the properties of mystery liquids.

Monday is a normal school day. Tuesday is a half day. You will be receiving an official informative letter from the school. Holidays Shavuot and Buddha's birthday require that work and school be suspended, therefore, families can observe these celebrations together.

Social Studies reports about the Cities of Israel need to be completed and shared on Monday. Students should be able to answer questions about the city they researched without having to rely on the poster or the report 100% of the time. Please allow your child time to read the report out loud to you several times for familiarity. They may log these readings as 1 page into the Reading Logs.

Spelling lesson 24 should be completed and returned Monday, as the Unit 4 test will be held Monday morning. Students need to practice the words in order to succeed. Also, they can use the Unit 4 Spelling Project (due Tuesday) as a fun way to study challenging words.

Socially, Grade Two is going "through the fire." Have a conversation with your child about the friends and how they get along. They are itching to share information.

Dear parents,

Students have started on the Social Studies "Cities of Israel" report. I would like for them to keep up the creative spirit and finish the report, using all of the facts from the poster and even adding a bit more to the report, giving it their "voice". We have discussed plagiarism, and how, instead, they can read an article, talk about it, and write what they discussesd instead of writing what they see directly. Please encourage them to use this system at home.

I planned to give more time for students to write this report. For students who finish on time, please bring it tomorrow so that we can begin presenting. Others, please have it ready, along with having practiced your presentation, on Monday.

Dear parents,
Some students did not pick up their spelling books before leaving class yesterday. Because of this, I am giving students an extra day to turn in the spelling lesson 23 assignment. The spelling test may be on either Thursday or Friday, depending on the readiness of the class.

Please continue to write all messages to the teacher in the communication book. There has been some confusion over the last few weeks regarding where students need to go after school because the student has one plan, but the communication book either says nothing or has a different plan written. Please write all messages in the communication book and not have students relay messages themselves.
You may also write notes for the whole week at one time. Please date them accordingly so that we know which note is for which date.

Dear parents,
It was exciting to see the Social Studies projects floating into the classroom this morning. The exact due date for the poster is this Thursday, May 13.
Oral presentations will be held both Thursday and Friday.
Students who have their poster done can begin writing a report for the presentation. The report format will be given in class tomorrow (Tuesday). Students need to share, in a report, all of the information that is on the poster, and also be able to answer a few questions or tell a few other facts about the city.

Other progress:
Overall, Grade Two is coming along just fine in the Spelling program. Spelling is being refined and vocabulary is being built with a strong foundation. [Next spell test is Thursday, Lesson 23]

Science: Unit: Solids, Liquids, and Gases. Important points about the properties of the 3 states of matter are being learned through reading, class discussions, discovery, inquiry, and experiments.

Math: We are looking into comparing and ordering numbers in the 100's. This is a nice break after learning to count money.

Language Arts: Through play, students are reviewing parts of speech, digraphs, antonyms and synonyms, and word families.

The information collected needs to be used to decorate a POSTER about the city.

Dear Parents,
Another fun-filled week for Grade 2 has passed.

Coming next week are presentations for the Science unit, Energy and Motion, and also for the Spelling Unit 3. The Science presentations will be done Monday in class. Thank you parents for helping the groups come together and to get their thoughts and ideas materialized.
The Spelling Project is a fun and interesting activity that will expose the student to two (or more) types of written media. Students need to use the misspelled words form Post-test 17 and Pre-test 18 first. This project's due date is Thursday.

Dear parents,
From now until the end of the school year, we will be practicing spelling from the spelling program on a regular basis. 2 lessons per week will be given. Tests will continue to be on Thursdays. Monday, the additional test day will be added starting next week. So help prepare your child for the spelling test on Monday covering Lesson 16. The Lesson 17 Pretest will also be given on Monday. The Lesson 17 post test will be given on Thursday. The format of the post test is described in yesterday's blog. The format for the Pretests will be the traditional activity of writing only the lesson word which is dictated by the teacher. Students will not be actively practicing the spelling words in class, but will see them written on the board every day.

1. Journal entry
2. In place of reading, please record in the Reading Log, Spelling Lesson 16, as the reading of that lesson will satisfy the home reading requirement. Remember to use a separate sheet of paper for the Write to the Point and the Challenge Yourself activities. Use 5 or more words in Write to the Point. Underline the lesson words in Challenge Yourself. Because the spelling lesson schedule is so tight, it is important that lessons in the book are completed and turned in on time or early.
3. SPELLING Lesson 16 p.94-99 (Parents, although it sounds like a lot, the students say it is easy and therefore balances itself out.)
4. MATH catch-up packets. Tomorrow I will be giving the lesson for pages 117 and 118 in the Math program. Students who are pages behind have a thin packet that must be completed in order for them to be board with the lessons being given in class each day. Dear Parents,
Some of you had questions about the Yom Haatzmaut collage project. The school should be sending correspondence to you. Also, the collage piece is due on Friday. Each student should have taken home ONE squarish piece of poster board to be elegantly decorated [in any art media] using mainly Israeli colors and other necessary accents. It is to be returned, preferably, to the Jewish Studies teacher.

Tonight's homework:
1. Reading log and Journal
2. Study the Spelling words and how to use them in sentences. Test is tomorrow. From now on, tests will be dictations of sentences, as suggested in the curriculum. I will dictate several sentences. Students will write the sentences and underline the lesson words.
Students will be graded on:
1. Spelling the lesson words correctly and using capitals should they require them (at the beginning of sentences)
2. Proper sentence structure, which includes initial capitalization and end punctuation
3. Dictated words are all written and in the correct order

Dear parents,
As a part of Yom Haatzmaut celebration next week, your child has brought home an art project. Please read the letter dated 29th of Nisan, 5770. Please have her take care in doing this independent project. Grade Two students are very creative and they use materials very well.

We have a record number of students who turned in their journals and reading logs today. I was very happy to read about all of the activities the children engaged in during their holiday break. I was even more impressed by the amount of reading Grade 2 students have been doing! Mia, alone, read more than 8 chapter books! Encourage the students to keep up the good work and to set positive habits and productive daily routines.

Welcome back everyone

Humidity was high in the building, but our spirits were even higher. Everyone was happy to return to Grade 2, and even happier to think, discover, learn, and test their knowledge and skills.
Today, we discussed asking the question, "WHY?" Based on a piece of writing by Anne Franke, the students listened to a reader share Anne Franke's thoughts about asking the question why to others and to yourself. Students discovered that when they want to know why something is and they ask themselves why instead of someone else, they think and they become a little smarter. Their own ideas are just as valuable as everyone else's. The size and age of the person is not important because everyone has a conscience that he or she uses. They are learning the value of their own selves and being offered another chance to express themselves.

Good day parents,

Ronnie and Mia practiced math on ixl.com last night.

More students are turning in their homework. The vocabulary sentences are looking fantastic. Students are practicing the use of conventions (capitalizing the beginning of a sentence, end punctuation, proper grammar).

1. For homework over the weekend, students will continue to write a fable. In the Language Arts notebook, your child started writing a fable by telling the moral of the story first. Knowing the lesson to be learned in the story gives the writer direction. The fable can be as long as is necessary. However, I suggest parents provide some guidance so that this fun activity will not end up in frustration. FABLES may be word processed and saved. Documents may be forwarded to me under the child's name and "fable" (Oz fable). I require a hard copy be brought in to school on the due date. DUE MONDAY

2. Practice the 20 vocabulary words! Some words that are a challenge to the students are: different, sour, delicious, violet, and special. Many of the words that have silent letters in them or are not spelled exactly the way they are pronounced. Therefore parents, you can assist by ensuring your child can spell these words with ease. DUE MONDAY

3. Read and record. DUE TUESDAY

4. One journal entry per day. DUE TUESDAY

5. Students have random homework assignments this weekend. They are mainly assignments that need to be re-done or have not been attempted already. Most of those assignments are in spelling. DUE MONDAY

6. Clarification on the math sheet that everyone thought was too easy. It is simply a helpful tool for parents or others to say to the Grade Two student. The G2 student should practice giving the answers as fast as possible and also to memorize this basic arithmetic. Many papers were returned to me with answers on them done by the student. This was not what the sheet was intended for. However, now the person drilling the G2 student has an effective answer key! The papers were returned to students. Please use them for practice.

Announcement:

Tuesday is Field Day at the Aberdeen Sports Ground. Please read the information provided by the school. Please heed all of the admonishments suggested by the school as well. We all want this day to be packed with fun for everyone.

Does this sound like the Grade Two class you know? It is! They have been expressing themselves in many different ways, showing their special talents, and learning and appreciating those qualities in each of their classmates that make them special. Here are a couple of activities your child has done this week:
-Created a poster that told everyone about how teeth are and how to take good care of them
-Mastered some spelling words from 2 lessons
-Write about yummy foods like apples, oranges, and birthday cakes
-Revealed some of their favorite things and shared their wish and who they love
-Identified, discussed, demonstrated, and wrote about Newton's Laws of Motion
-Mastered the months of the year in Mandarin
-Practiced virtues like courtesy, kindness, helpfulness, perseverance, and diligence

Science: How Sound Travels

Hasn't this been an awesome week, parents! So, if your little ones seem a little tired (and sometimes cranky), please remember that each day in Grade Two is a big day for each student. They expend large amounts of physical and mental energy learning both academically and socially. Your child needs plenty of rest, lots of nutritious food to eat, and plenty of water to drink every day.
Parents, temperature checks also need to be made and recorded and placed in the communication book for daily readings.

1. Your child may have work to catch up on over the weekend. Oops! We had no time to pass out the homework. We will pass it out on Monday. Or, your child can simply follow the instructions and use a piece of A4 paper for the assignment.

What's going "up" in Grade 2:

Students are practicing writing, using the writing process and writing paragraphs using all of the elements of good writing (grammar, punctuation, spelling, capitals, indentation, etc.)

The class just finished listening to a chapter book I read aloud entitled The Boxcar Children, #1. All Grade 2 students are reading chapter books now. How fantastic! Let's help them keep the momentum going.

We are expressing ourselves in many different ways. Singing is a favorite in the classroom. This week, we sang and listened to our favorite songs as we wrote about why they are our favorites.

Math is progressing well. Students are excited to start counting money, so they are completing double digit subtraction. Tal earned 100% on his math test today, and was ecstatic about counting money. Congratulations Oz! He has successfully started in the Grade 3 Math book.

Science: ENERGY and MOTION Students are learning Newton's Laws of Motion and demonstrating them. They are finding out about gravity and how forces work. Ask your child the difference in the way sound and light travels, and also the wavelengths of the color spectrum, ROYGBIV. You may be enlightened by their knowledge!

HOMEWORK:

Only Reading, Journal, and Spelling p. 76- 81 (all) to do this weekend.

Most students still DO NOT have their Tree booklets turned in. Please bring the on Monday. So far Ronnie, Oz, Yali, Rachamim, Mia, and Rafaela have turned in the Tree Booklet.

Next week, Tuesday, March 9 is conference day. Also, Wednesday, March 17 is the second conference day. No school for students on those days. I look forward to meeting with the parents again.

Dear parents,
Grade Two has been working hard to accomplish their academic goals for the week and to acquire virtues like truthfulness, peacefulness, and self-control. In Math class, our goal was to complete chapter 23 on Fractions. The students had fun learning about and sharing what denominators and numerators do. They colored fractions and talked about sharing apples and candy bars. Yali, Mia, Oz, Arya, Tal, Rafaela, Ronnie, Romi, and Bella earned 100% on their fractions test. Congratulations!!

HOMEWORK:
1. READ. READ. READ. Then RECORD :)
2. Write one journal entry each day, even if it is just one sentence. Goals: Use complete sentences with capitals and end punctuation.
3. Finish the Tree booklet project. Rafaela turnes her gorgeous Trre book today. We will share it with the class when we return.
4. Listen to We Are the World, and practice singing. If you were not assigned a part, practice the whole song and a part will be assigned to you when we return. If you have a part already, you still need to know how to sing the whole song, so practice.
5. Eat healthy. Rest well. Enjoy time with your family.

Constructive recess: Grade Two will be having more constructive recesses where the teacher will guide them in their play in order to develop teamwork and cooperative attitudes at the height of active play. They will also have free play time during recess where they can practice cooperation, sharing, and peacefulness. Parents, feel free to allow your child to keep an active play toy in the classroom recess bag. Sports equipment like balls, jumping ropes, and other simple toys that allow children to have active and cooperative play are needed. I am not allowing dolls and breakables to be played with during the school day. The equipment brought to school will be shared with the class, but everyone will know the owner of each item. Therefore, write your child's name on the item before bringing it to school. Also know that with daily use of these items, there will be wear and tear, and things may even break. In such cases, items will not be replaced by other chidren or teachers. However, the child may bring other play equipment to be shared.

Dear Friends,
We have a very special message from Ronnie today. When we began discussing Tu B'Shvat and what we could do as a class several weeks ago, it was suggested that we plant a tree in Israel. Well, that would have been a challenge for us, but it was not impossible.
Luckily, one of our students happened to be in Israel on Tu B'Shvat. She planted a tree on behalf of our class and all of Carmel School. She will give us more details when she returns to class. We thank her so much for this wonderful service to the earth. Thank you, Ronnie!!!

4. MATH: Unless you have special instructions in your Communication Book, finish pages PW 89 and PW90 tonight. For a small clip, you may cut out one of the small clips under the feather on problem number 1. You can skip either #1 or #2 on PW90 if you have cut through the math problem. Another option is to take a piece of paper, cut it the size of the small clip and use it to measure. This way, you CAN do #1 and #2 on PW90.
MATH work does not need to turned in until Thursday. Follow the pace of the homework to even out the time you spend on it each night. If you finish the whole chapter before Thursday, you may turn it in to the Finished Work basket when you come to school.

Weekly Word (an amazing week)

Good day parents,
-Grade Two has had a very busy week! Together, they solidified what they know about the properties of solid shapes like the number of faces, edges, and corners of pyramids, cones, cubes. Tests will be taken on Tuesday.

-Field day was this week. Sportsmanship and teamwork were "tops" in their game!

-Cursive handwriting is coming along beautifully.

-Students became aware of the world crisis in Haiti, empathized and immediately took action. ---We had 100% participation today in giving donations to the Haiti Relief Fund.

-Grade Two have been assisting younger students with benching at lunchtime. Practicing being a good example to others helps to form a firm foundation.
-They had fun learning more about trees and including Language arts (adjectives and adverbs) into the lessons.
-Derech Eretz: Socrates' story of the Three Sieves: Truth, Goodness, and Necessity
Students learned what the three sieves were and what happens when people use the sieves before they speak. The story was represented artistically be each student. (Rachamim, I found your artwork. It is still in good condition. ) This teachable moment provided the opportunity to explain realism and abstract art. Then the students used their flowing wrists to write morals to the story as captions on their artwork. They are excited to share their finished pieces with you.

Tonight, (1) please listen to your child read. Ask him or her questions form the grren bookmark. They may answer the questions in their journal. (2) A journal entry for today needs to be made. Be sure to write the date on the page. Encourage your child to use capitlaization and end punctuation. We've already discsused this in class. They might be surprised that you, too, are informed.

Arya returned her booklet, About Trees. She underlined the parts that she liked. It looked like she really enjoyed reading the booklet.

Some students are taking home assignments that were not fully complete. We have some displays out, and their work is not put up because it is not complete. Please return it complete tomorrow. (ABOUT TREES)

Today, we also discussed the world crisis in Haiti. We also had an "empathy" activity where we tried to put ourselves in thier shoes. The students did not learn what the word empathy was today, but they did express it. Ask your child about it. They are very informed individuals.

Reading logs were turned in by some students. However, I am giving house points to those students whose time I can actually count. If the amount of time read is not documented, then I do not know how long your child read. In order to monitor your child's progress properly, I also need to know the number of pages that were read.
Reading log points: Leeor, Rafaela, Yali
2. One journal entry for today. Rafaela always includes a sketch illustrating her adventure for the day. She also has the date pre-written on each page. It is easier for her to keep track of what she has done. Thank you, Rafaela and family.
3. Bookmarks: Students who are reading chapter books are using green bookmarks. At the end of each reading seSsion, your child should ask you (or join them) in asking and answering questions about what was read. When your child becomes comfortable with answering the questions (without hesitation or having to look back at the chapter), then he or she is ready to record the answers in their journal. Answering all of the questions in the journal will count as a journal entry. You may also answer the question by other means, just as long as I am able to access the student's responses. This means you may use a separate sheet of paper. You may voice record or video record the responses. There are many possibilities.

Thank you for bringing in more empty cereal boxes and tissue rolls. We have enough of them for now. However, we need many more Kleenex (tissue paper) boxes for a eco-project coming up soon.

NOTE: In class, we are in the process of writing a book about trees. First, we gather information, look at samples, and then go into the writing process. Last Friday, students took home a book entitled, About Trees. They needed to read the book and, using a straight edge (students know that this is another name for a ruler), underline their favorite parts of the book. Many students brought the book back blank. We will try the activity again this week.

Today was field day at Wong Chung Hang Pitch. Grade Two had a fantastic time. They were all very active and played very well together. They showed lots of positive teamwork and sportsmanship.

SOLID SHAPES

PLANE SHAPES

Today, students gave examples of solid shaped objects they find in their world. Rachamim could find pyramids in Egypt. Eitan could find televisions that are cube-shaped. We also discused the differnce between two dimensional and three dimensional object. Two dimensional objects have length and width, while three dimensional objects have length, width, and depth. Two dimensional objects are called Plane shapes and are flat. Three dimensional objects are Solid shapes and "look real." We just wrapped up chapter 17, Plane Shapes, and are moving into chapter 18, Solid Shapes.

Rachamim has taken chapter 18 home with him, and should bring it back when he returns. The packet does NOT have to be complete when he returns.

We also visited Harold the giraffe at the LEAP program site. The students were very excited, and had lots of fun sharing what they know about good health and proper nutrition.

READING AT HOME: Students who are reading chapter books will get a special GREEN bookmark. On the bookmark are questions that your family can ask the reader. The answers can be written in the journal or on a separate sheet of paper and turned in every Tuesday along with the Reading Log and the Journal.

Update and Weekly Word

Good evening parents,

Hopefully you see this message this evening, as I am sure you have been looking for an update.

Yesterday students shared what they wanted to know about trees. Some very interesting inquiries were contrived like, "Can trees be polka dotted?" and "How old is the oldest tree?"

Your child took home his or her question to investigate. This morning we received answers from five students. Hurray for those five students who turned in their homework on time! I'm looking forward to answers from the rest of the team. Rafaela found out that there ARE polka-dotted trees. We also found out from Isabel that the oldest tree known is found in Switzerland. It is said to be 9,550 years old! Wow! I wonder who is counting those years.

In the Grade Two class, students are excited about trees. We are observing, discovering, writing, and singing about trees. We are also following other course curricula. For example, tonight your child brought home a double sided page of instructions with a filmstrip to accompany it. Today we read about how to prevent the spread of germs and also about safety and prevention of injury. Everyone agreed that it would fun to share a comic strip of injury and injury prevention. The instructions are on the paper. Have fun!

Spelling

Students are editing and revising pieces of writing that they wrote as early as the Bowen Road Walk. It is quite nostalgic! They are delving into their Language Arts notebooks to master some spelling vocabulary that they had misspelled/misused earlier in the year. Students are also in the process of writing expository and non-fiction pieces. These pieces will be consolidated into a wonderful Tu B'Shvat presentation.

In relation to Tu B'Shvat, we are investigating ways to be contributing members to the health of our world. We are not only looking at our own health, but we are also finding out ways that we can help the environment. So far, we have been exposed to ways to save trees, water, and electric energy. We are looking at ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Speaking of helping the environment, we planted a bean plant behind the school. Every week, we would go check on its progress. When we returned from Winter Break, we found that the plant was gone. Well, it wasn't really gone, it appeared to have been eaten by some small creature. As a result, I explained the chain of life and how the plant was sacrificed for the animal to be able to survive in its habitat. Our bean plant was very healthy and good, so good that an animal found it amongst all the weeds in the area. It must have been like finding gold at the end of the rainbow for our little friend.

Also this week, we shared our ideas about what it means to sacrifice using Shel Silverstein's book, The Giving Tree. Just as the tree sacrificed itself for the boy, your children had ideas about the meaning and effects of self-sacrifice. This year's Grade Two class is a very keen and cognizant group. We have a lot of fun learning each day.

-Please check your child's temperature each morning before entering the school and record the temperature in the Communication book.

-Leeor's Communication book was left in the class. I will be in touch with her mother.

5. Students who need to finish the math chapters are doing well. Keep up the pace and turn in the finished work.

Regarding reading at home:
Students will NOT be receiving new reading logs because the logs they have still have many blank pages. However, please add the following information when recording into the log:
- amount of time the student read
- number of pages read during that time

If the child is reading a chapter book, which all students should be reading now, there is no need to rewrite the title each day, only the page numbers read and the amount of time used reading those pages.

All homework is due tomorrow.

Happy New Year and Welcom Back everyone! Grade 2 students are excited to be back, and are ready to get into the homework business.

Today:
1. Read 10 minutes or read a whole book. Record it.

3. Complete and color DIGEST! DIGEST!
4. Handwriting practice

Return the EVERYTHING tomorrow.

Some students have a Math Chapter 14 packet to complete. We are now learning more about plane figures and symmetry. Please complete the Chapter 14 packet and return it. Follow the instructions on the front page of the packet.

Some students are choosing thier own books and becoming more famialiar with particular authors. Encourage your child to read a second book by the same author if they enjoyed reading the first one. We also want to promote diversity, so reading different genres is just fine, too!

This afternoon grade 2 performed wonderfully for the school in the school's Hanukkah play.

HOMEWORK
1. Journal Entry. Students write one or two sentences (or more) about today. Today was an adventurous day for Grade 2. I'm sure they have plenty to share.

2. Read a whole book or read for 10 minutes and record the book name and page numbers read. If students want to read more, then write down how much time you read.

3. Some students need to finish their spelling assignment (p. 62-63). They took their books home to finish.

4. I have only received 4 out of 16 mapped bedrooms. I hope to receive the rest from the class tomorrow.

5. Some students took some finished math assignments home today. If you would like to recycle the paper, our class will reuse the pictures in the packets. Please bring them back to the classroom and we will re-use them.

Today, your child attempted to find the solution to an addition problem that contained five 2-digit numbers. These students found the right answer: Oz, Tal, Isabel, Moran, Mia, Isaac, and Leeor. Cheers for you!

Today your child worked out a math problem using six 2-digit numbers!

1. Students wrote their journal entry today in class on a piece of paper. The entry should be rewritten or taped into the actual journal. If you do not have a journal yet, simply keep the notes together and put them into the journal when you get it.

2. Read a whole book or read for 10 minutes and record the book title and/or page numbers you read.

3. Mapping your bedroom. Students must use a ruler or some type of straight edge and a pencil to map their bedroom onto the graph paper. It is from a bird's eye view that they will be sketching the lay-out. You can see on the opposite side of the paper where your child practiced making very straight lines on the grid lines using a ruler. The objective is for them to get more practice using the straight-edge.

4. Grammar lesson 7: did, done and gave, given
Just like Monday's grammar homework. The format has been set up on the back page. Students must become familiar with this format so that they can do it by themselves. Have your child underline the key word in each sentence (did, done, gave, or given) along with the helping verb.

5. Math homework should be completed and returned tomorrow. The chapter test will be given Thursday.
6. Spelling homework will be given tomorrow.

Note: Yali's communication book was left in the classroom.

Uh oh! Reading is fundamental Fun - da- MENTAL. Be ready!!
Starting in January, students will be rewarded for reading either 10 minutes each and everyday or reading one or more books per day. Please help your child develop this good habit at home.

2. Parents, please purchase a small, unique journal for your child, about the size of the communication book. Write one or two senences in your journal today. Do not write on the first page. That page is for yesterday's entry. Daily entries are encouraged during the Winter break. Students can draw or stocka star net to entries that they are willing to share. Most of the time there will be no topic to write on, as I would like students to write with no constraints.

3. Math PW 67-PW69. Some math papers were returned for checking. Students and parents found that they ran into difficulties when attempting to do the unassigned pages. Please only do the pages assign. I give the homework as it is taught. Attempting to complete work that has not been taught proves to be quite fruitless.

ANNOUNCEMENT: There will be a Hanukkah party in the Grade 2 class on Thursday from 12:45 to 1:15. It will be a small celebration for students only. Our class mother, Debra Wacks is coordinating the party. If anyone would like to act as co-mom for the rest of the year, that would be fabulous. Two's company!

Thank you for getting the library books back to school. A bunch came in this morning. I expect to see another bunch tomorrow. Way to go!

Math explanation:
Regrouping refers to borrowing in subtraction. On p. 67 and 67, students practice subtracing a one-digit number that is more than the ones digit in the larger number. This requires borrowing from the tens place. Students may need to rewrite the math problem in vertical form in order to see the problem easier. Show the borrowing while working the math problem.

However, for today, you may use a single sheet of paper or your choice of stationery. Students write one or two sentences about how their day went at school. If they CHOOSE to write more, they may. Although this activity might exceed the required amount of time for second graders to do homework.

3. Language Arts Grammar packet due Wednesday. May be turned in tomorrow if it is completed and of good quality

4. Math Subtraction packet PW65 and PW66 only (except Mia and Oz)

If this homework exceeds the amount of time you have alotted for homework, it is not necessary for your child to complete it. Please send a note in the communication book explaining the situation. We must be flexible in gauging how much time your child needs to complete the homework assignments.

Week of December 7 -11

Happy Hanukkah!!

This week, we went on a field trip to the Ohel Leah synagogue at the JCC site. Students inquired, observed, and discovered aspects of Jewish culture as it relates to the synagogue and to the Jewish community in Hong Kong.

Have you ever hoped for something? If all you did was hope, did you get what you wanted? Well, in Owl Moon, Pa and his son went owling. They hoped to see a Great Horned Owl in the woods. But they did not just hope. They had to be silent and listen as well. Every student in grade 2 has hoped for something and had to follow that hope with an action. They wrote about their efforts and the fruits it bore.

Science and Math are being wrapped up with a Science portflio and math tests. The portfolio is still in the process of completion, and tests are coming in like children to a Hanukkah party.

No homework was given Wednesday and Thursday, but students are still expected to read a book for at least ten minutes.
Thank you for bringing the Reading logs in. However, the newly formatted books are not ready yet. We will switch books very soon. Until then, continue to use the Reading Logs you have.

Grade 2 class' goals for learning multiplication is to learn to skip-count rhythmically by 3, 4, 6, and 9 this year. Afterwards, we will practice 7's and 8's. They learned 1, 2, 5, and 10 last year. Some students have found that the 11's are quite easy and already know them well.
When they look at a grid, they are able to count two sides and figure out which two numbers they need to multiply.

Some students like to picture the multiplication problem in terms of rows of an item, and a certain number of items in each row. The Math book demonstrates this example well.

2. Regarding school uniforms: Students are responsible for their own uniform and its parts. If pieces are left at school, they go to the lost and found. If they are lost on the bus or elsewhere, we cannot do anything to help retrieve it. Please write your child’s name on each piece with a permanent marker.
3. Reading Logs need to be turned in on Friday. Friday ends the term. A new format for recording the reading at home will be given. Please ensure that your child is reading at least 10 minutes each day, 5 or more days per week, or 50 or more minutes during the week. Hopefully, they will read each day instead of trying to satisfy the requirement in one or two days. Reading everyday increases reading fluency and comprehension, and also mental acuity.
4. The weather is getting colder. For good health, get enough rest and drink plenty of hot liquids. Many students come in with dry skin. It bothers them. Please moisturize.

Dear Parents,
Thank you for bearing with me through a rough week. I was out with a nasty cold, but Mrs. Forster ran the class very smoothly. Now we're getting back on track!!

Spelling: Lesson 9 Although the class did well on the pre-test, we will continue to practice the words and their meanings with the exercises for Lesson 9 in the book. Final spelling test will beon Thursday, Dec. 3rd.
Language Arts: We are in the process of showing all that we know about NOUNS and about VERBS. We are starting an in-class project that is scheduled for completion on Thursday, the 3rd.
Science: We are wrapping up Interactions of Living Things with a collaborative culminating project using the creative ideas of all the students.
Social Studies: Features. Students are understanding and analyzing features of a landscape.
Mathematics: Second graders are practicing basic multiplication using grouping teachniques. Also, the are discovering how skip-counting and multiplication are directly connected.
Derech Eretz: Our goal is to be a very peaceul class. We discussed and practiced the virtue of thankfulness . We expressed what is in our hearts through art. We are also practicing the technique of not speaking, but opening our ears and turning on our brains to listen to others.

Congratulations to Bella! She won the Book Cafe prize for writing why she enjoys going to the Book Cafe.

Grade 2 gave an excellent performance in this morning's Friday Assembly. They performed a skit about School Rules #4: Be Honest. Then they went above and beyond and explained the consequences of our actions when we make mistakes like breaking the school rules.

MUSIC:
Grade Two have been learning about our bodies and how our bodies can make sounds; they have learning how to make musical rhythms using ¼ and 1/8 notes by walking, clapping and playing musical patterns as a round. They have been creative too, and made up their own Chinese dance and their own rhythm as well, but most importantly, they are learning to listen.

Dear Parents,

Today your child purchased some fantastic reading materials from the Book Cafe. Use these books to read for at least 10 minutes. Record the information in the reading log.

Math test on 2-digit addition tomorrow. Students can finish the worksheet. Try having them race against the clock for fun.

Normally, we have spelling tests on Thursdays. Since we had the field trip, it will be postponed. I will try to fit it in tomorrow. Study Lesson 7 words with your child. If they find that they are too easy, challenge them by reviewing Lessons 8 and also 9. They did very well in the pre-test. Most students missed only 1 or 2 words. It may be possible for Grade 2 to be tested on two sets of words tomorrow. Help them prepare.

Next week: More homework in Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts, which includes writing and grammar (verbs)

Thank you for returning the Book Cafe forms and submissions!

1. Math Practice book packets have a due date on front. For pages that are already finished, corrections can be made. This is the last chance to correct any mistakes before turning it in!

2. Read 10 minutes and record.
Students who turn in the Reading Log on time will get House points. Students who did not turn in Reading logs today may turn them in tomorrow, although they will be marked "turned in late."

3. Practice for spelling post test. Lesson 7 pre-test is on a small sheet of paper. Help your child practice spelling the words, especially those that were misspelled.

The following students made 100% on the Lesson 7 pre-test:

P.S.
Tomorrow is Rosh Hodesh. Students may wear appropriate street clothes to school. Dress warm! Students should also bring/wear warm clothing like scarves, gloves, and hats. We have recess outside this week.

1. Spelling practice: We will have a lot of spelling practice this week because the words are easy for students to spell, but they must be able to use them properly. As a result, many have passed pre-tests for lesons 7, 8, and 9. However, we will continue doing activities using the words. Please refer to the Unit 2 Spelling at Home study sheet for the lists of words.

TASK: On the stapled loose leaf lined paper, students must write one sentence for each spelling word.
There ARE exceptions!
If students use two spelling words in one sentence, then it will be counted as two spelling words being used. Please do not mix the spelling words from the different lessons. One page should contain words from only one lesson. All spelling words must be underlined and spelled correctly. If not, credit will not be given.
PAGE SET-UP: Please write the student's name on the front of the page. Write the lesson title on top of each page. Also, number each sentence.

Begin with words from Lesson 7. Complete sentences for words from Lessons 7 and 8 this week.

DUE FRIDAY, November 20

Because students work at different paces, students may do additional lessons, beyond the requirement.

2. Spelling Lesson in the book. p. 42-45

3. Read for 10 minutes and record information in the Reading log with a parent signature. Return Reading Logs tomorrow! Reading p. 44 and 45 in Spelling book will suffice for the reading at home requirement.

4. Look over the school rules with your parents. Keep the copy of the rules at home.
